HABITAT

Markhors survive on the steep arid hillsides of the Himalayan Mountains in Central Asia, including the countries of Tajikistan and Afghanistan. In the summer months, they can be found as high as 13,000 feet above sea level, foraging on grasses; in the winter, they avoid deep snow.

 The name “Markhor” is a combination of two Persian and Pashto words: “Mar” means snake and “khor” means eater.

HABITAT

The Nubian Ibex’ natural habitat is rocky, mountainous terrain, which they can navigate with ease while predators struggle to keep up, although they can also sometimes be found at lower elevations. Nubian ibex are well-adapted for their hot climates, with a shiny coat thought to help reflect sunlight to keep cool.

HABITAT

The blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra), also known as the Indian antelope, is an antelope native to India and Nepal. It inhabits grassy plains and lightly forested areas with perennial water sources.

The first Blackbucks were released in Texas in 1940. The blackbuck is the sole living member of the genus Antilope and is classified in the family Bovidae.

HABITAT

The Dybowski Sika Deer is the largest Sika deer in Texas, as well as the rest of the world.  It comes from the Ussuri region of southeastern Siberia and eastern Manchuria, and northeastern Korea. Sika deer are found in the temperate and subtropical forests of eastern Asia, preferring areas with dense understory, and where snowfall does not exceed 4–8 in. They tend to forage in patchy clearings of forests.

HABITAT

Axis porcinus has a native geographic range throughout India, including the Himalayan foothill zone and Southeast Asia, including Burma and Thailand. 

Humans have introduced free-ranging populations of A. porcinus in Sri Lanka, Australia, and the United States, including Texas, Florida, and Hawaii.

Axis porcinus appears to prefer dense forests; however, they are often observed in clearings, grasslands and occasionally wet grasslands.
